What is Luminescence Principle of Light guide like?

Light guide is optical part to emitting lights according to its purpose what kind of light would you like to radiate by taking in light from Light Engine(LED) placed on light guide's circumference.

For example, if the shape is rectangular and each of surfaces is transparent acrylic material, all lights entered from one side repeats full-reflecting inside and passes by an opposite side.(a)

However, Light guide also can illuminate other than opposite side which light entered using (b) method which put ditch or protrusion on the opposite side or using method (c) which makes its surface rough with processing.
